Anna contacted a lawyer from Caritas Kharkiv through the DRC digital platform to get help with the inheritance her grandmother left her. After the start of the full-scale invasion in February 2022, Anna left for Canada with her two children, and in May of the same year, her grandmother died, leaving her a will. Anna was unable to return to her native Kharkiv to claim her inheritance due to lack of funds and the inability to leave her children behind.
The lawyer explained what she needed to do. Anna executed a declaration of inheritance and a power of attorney for the lawyer from a notary in Canada so that he could obtain her grandmother's death certificate in Ukraine and submit the documents to a local notary. The documents were apostilled and legalized in Canada.
After receiving the documents in Ukraine, they were translated into Ukrainian, the lawyer obtained the death certificate and submitted the package of documents to the notary.
Anna received a certificate of inheritance, which was sent to Canada.
Thanks to the lawyer's help, the issue was resolved quickly.
This free legal aid was made possible thanks to the cooperation of Caritas Kharkiv with the Danish Refugee Council and funding from the Humanitarian Fund for Ukraine.
