Mykhailo turned to the lawyers of the Institute for Analysis and Advocacy, a DRC partner, because after the death of his aunt in the non-government controlled area of Ukraine, he could not open the inheritance because he did not have a death certificate legitimate in Ukraine.
Mr. Mykhailo was his aunt's sole heir and had a will executed in Ukraine. In order to open the inheritance in Ukraine, he would need to have a valid death certificate. IAA lawyer Daria Malinnikova helped the man file a petition with the court to establish the fact of his aunt's death in the non-government controlled area, which was fully satisfied. Based on the decision of the Kyiv District Court of Poltava, Mykhailo was able to obtain a state-issued death certificate and subsequently file an application with a notary to open an inheritance case.
Provision of free legal aid in Poltava region was made possible thanks to the cooperation of the NGO “Institute for Analysis and Advocacy” with the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) and funding from the European Union's civil protection and humanitarian aid.
