Gender equality in times of crisis: A key to development

Gender equality is a fundamental human right: the right of every individual, regardless of their gender, to live safely, be respected, and have equitable opportunities in life. In Ukraine, particularly amidst the ongoing war and widespread displacement, gender equality is not merely important; it is absolutely essential for the nation's recovery and future prosperity.

Gender equality signifies that women, men, girls, and boys possess the same rights and opportunities to access education, participate in the workforce, make informed decisions, experience safety within their homes, and voice their needs. It is fundamentally about fairness and equity. It does not imply uniformity among individuals but rather that no person should be disadvantaged, harmed, or marginalized solely due to their gender.

The impact of inequality on daily lives

Across many parts of the world, including Ukraine, women and girls frequently face amplified risks during periods of crisis. In times of war or displacement, specific challenges emerge:

  • Increased caregiving burden: women often become the sole caregivers for their families, frequently without adequate support systems.
  • Educational disruption: girls may be compelled to withdraw from school to assist with household responsibilities.
  • Surge in gender-based violence (GBV): Forms of violence such as intimate partnerviolence, sexual abuse, and psychological control often escalate significantly.

A considerable number of people refrain from reporting violence due to fear of judgment, shame, or disbelief. Furthermore, essential support services may be unavailable, or individuals may lack awareness of where to seek help.

Gender inequality is not always overt. It can manifest subtly, for example, as a woman's apprehension to speak during a meeting, a girl being discouraged from pursuing a "male" profession, or a man being ridiculed for expressing emotion. These instances are indicative of harmful stereotypes that ultimately restrict everyone.

Universal benefits of gender equality

When women and girls are safe, healthy, educated, and supported, the positive repercussions extend throughout society. Families are strengthened, and communities become more resilient. Boys and men also benefit significantly from more flexible gender roles, where empathy, respect, and emotional well-being are universally valued.

How can we promote gender equality? :

  • Actively listeni to and validating the experiences of women and girls.
  • Encourage girls and boys to pursue their aspirations without gender-based limitations.
  • Counteractjokes or comments that perpetuate gender-based shaming.
  • Provide non-judgmental support to survivors of violence.

The urgency of gender equality in crisis

War and conflict disproportionately affect different segments of the population, often exacerbating existing inequalities. In Ukraine, the war has led to a dramatic increase in reports of intimate partner violence. Many women have lost their homes, livelihoods, and established support networks. Some have endured violence during displacement or while residing in temporary shelters.

In these critical moments, it is even more important to ensure that:

  • Women and girls are safe access to comprehensive support services.
  • Women's voices are meaningfully included in all community decision-making processes.
  • Girls are able to continue their education and pursue their ambitions.
  • Men and boys are supported to serve as positive role models and allies in promoting equality.

Prioritizing gender equality is not just about human rights, it's a strategicly important for building a more stable, just, and prosperous Ukraine for all its citizens.
