What will be the responsibility of the owner whose pet died due to negligence?

Liability depends on the circumstances:

1. If the negligence has signs of animal cruelty:

• If the owner acted negligently, but his or her actions or omissions had signs of cruelty (deliberate disregard for the needs of the animal, which caused its death), criminal liability applies:
• Restriction of liberty for a term of 1 to 3 years.
• Imprisonment for a term of 2 to 3 years (Article 299 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

2. If the negligence did not have signs of cruelty:

• If the owner's actions were unintentional and did not meet the signs of cruelty, there may be no direct criminal liability.
• However, there may be administrative liability for improper maintenance of an animal under Article 154 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of Ukraine:
• Fine: from UAH 170 to UAH 340.
• Repeated violation within a year: UAH 340 to 510
