Share

Basic rules for determining the child's name:

  • The child's name is determined by mutual agreement of the parents.
  • In the case of a child born to an unmarried woman and in the absence of voluntary recognition of paternity, the name is determined by the child's mother.

Number of names:

  • A child may be given no more than two names, unless otherwise follows from the customs of the national minority to which the mother and/or father belong.

Disputes between parents:

  • If the parents cannot agree on the name of the child, the dispute is resolved:
  • By the guardianship and custody authority.
  • In a court of law.

Prohibitions on choosing a name:

  • The Ukrainian legislation does not explicitly define the list of prohibited names, but the Civil Registry Office has the right to refuse to register a name if it is offensive, contains symbols, numbers or contradicts the moral principles of society.
