Driving license

A Ukrainian driver's license is valid in Italy for 1 year from the moment of official registration of a Ukrainian. The official registration of a Ukrainian takes place at the migration service offices when receiving temporary protection. You can find the nearest branch on the website.

After this period, it is forbidden to drive a car. The fine is EUR 2,000.

If you use an old-style driver's license, you are NOT REQUIRED to have its translation.

You do not need to take the theoretical and practical exams, but you must receive confirmation from the Ukrainian side that your driver's license is valid. To do this, contact the "Motorizazzione civile" institution, which will independently send the request to Ukraine.

You can convert your driver's license to an Italian one without passing the theoretical and practical test. You can convert your driver's license only during the first 4 years of official registration in Italy. Official registration (for the purposes of your driver's license recognition) means the driver's registration of his /her place of residence in Italy. Persons who use temporary protection or other types of protection and have a valid driver's license issued in Ukraine can use their driver's license in the EU during the entire period of validity of temporary protection or other types of protection (no conversion required).

Important!

If a Ukrainian has missed the 4-year deadline for license conversion, he/she must complete his/her studies at a driving school and pass driving tests.
