Eligibility criteria – if you face persecution based on:
- race;
- nationality;
- political or religious beliefs; and/or
- membership of a particular social group.
Germany must be the first country you enter to obtain refugee status.
Otherwise, you must apply for refugee status in another country.
Duration – depends on the duration of persecution.
The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) usually issues 3 different permits for a period of 1-3 years depending on the circumstances of the persecution.
Opportunities – education, employment, enrolment of children in kindergarten, social assistance, housing, access to medical care, etc.
The procedure for obtaining refugee status is complex and takes 7-12 months.
