What should be done in the case of detection of a child in need of care?

Actions to be taken:

1. Notify the guardianship and custody authority:

• This should be done immediately once it becomes known about a child in need of protection.

2. Authorities responsible for guardianship and custody:

• District state administrations.
• Executive bodies of city, district, and village councils.
• District administrations in the cities of Kyiv and Sevastopol.

What the guardianship and custody authority does:

• The authority is obliged to:
• Inspect the child’s living conditions.
• Investigate circumstances indicating the need for guardianship or care.
• Take measures for the temporary placement of the child (e.g., in a family, children's institution, or other child facility).
• Make a decision on further actions, including registering the child.

Note:

• In case of immediate risk to the child's safety or health, the police can also be contacted.
