Marriage registration in Ukraine is carried out according to the established legal procedure. Below are the main stages and requirements of this process:

1. Submission of the Marriage Registration Application:

  • Personal submission: The couple personally submits a written application to any department of the Civil Status Registration Service (DRAСS) of their choice. It is necessary to present passports or other documents that prove identity.
  • Online submission: Ukrainian citizens who are 18 years old and have an electronic signature can submit the application via the "Diia" portal. The steps include:
  • Log in to the "Diia" portal and go to the "Family" section.
  • Select the "Marriage Application" service.
  • Fill out the application, choosing the time and place of registration, ceremony format, and additional services.
  • Pay the administrative fee.
  • Sign the application with an electronic signature.
  • The partner will receive a link to the application by email, log in to the portal, and sign the application with their electronic signature.
  • Afterward, the selected DRAСS will send the result of the application review and details about the ceremony to the email.

2. Registration Timeline:

  • Normally, marriage registration occurs one month after the application is submitted.
  • In the presence of valid reasons, supported by documents, the head of the DRAСS may permit the marriage to be registered before the expiration of this period.

3. Place of Registration:

  • The marriage is registered in the DRAСS department chosen by the couple.
  • At the couple's request, registration can take place at their place of residence, in a medical facility providing stationary care, or another location if they cannot attend the DRAСS for valid reasons.

4. Required Documents:

  • Passports or other identity documents.
  • Documents confirming the dissolution of the previous marriage (if it is a second marriage).
  • A court decision granting the right to marry (for individuals aged 16 to 18).
  • A document confirming the payment of the state fee or proof of exemption from the fee.

5. Specific Requirements for Foreigners:

  • Foreign citizens must provide documents that confirm the legality of their stay in Ukraine.
  • Documents issued by competent authorities of foreign states must be properly legalized and translated into Ukrainian, with notarized confirmation of the translation’s accuracy.
