International protection (asylum or subsidiary protection)

Admission criteria – if you have a reasonable fear of being persecuted on the grounds of:

- race;

- religion;

- nationality;

- political beliefs; and/or

- belonging to a particular social group, etc. (refugees),


or you do not meet the criteria for refugee status and:

- are at risk of being subjected to (i) the death penalty; or (ii) inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment; or

- you risk your life because of an armed conflict and you are unable or unwilling to use the protection of your home country (subsidiary protection).


Access procedure:

1. a notification of local migration police office of the intention to apply for international protection;

2. a registration of the request at local migration police office and filling in a special form; and

3. an interview with the territorial commission (a collegial body specialising in assessing international protection needs), which will either approve your request for one of the forms of protection and issue a residence permit or reject the request.


Please note that you do not need a passport or any legal status to stay in the country to apply for international protection in Italy.


Important!

The procedure for recognising international protection is much more complicated than obtaining temporary protection and involves restrictions on returning to Ukraine and storing personal documents.


The status is valid for 5 years (with the possibility of renewal).


Opportunities - the right to obtain a residence permit for a period of 5 years (with the possibility of renewal), education, social assistance, medical services, family reunification, citizenship (after 5 years of residence in refugee status or 10 years of residence under subsidiary protection).
