Medical care for pregnant women in Italy

Share

State health insurance entitles pregnant women to:

  • regular check-ups;
  • preparation for childbirth;
  • childbirth; and
  • postnatal care.

Firstly, a pregnant woman should visit a general practitioner.

The general practitioner will refer the woman to a specialist who will provide medical services free of charge.

If you do not have a residence permit for temporary protection, you and your partner cannot be expelled from Italy during pregnancy and 6 months after the birth of the child.

You can obtain a residence permit for medical treatment for 6 months before and 6 months after pregnancy by contacting local migration police office.
