Documentation of the transportation to Ukraine of the bodies of citizens who died abroad

The main stages of transportation organization:

  1. Specialized funeral services of foreign countries usually organize the transportation of the deceased body to Ukraine.
  2. For this purpose, it is necessary to obtain and execute a certain package of documents in accordance with the requirements of both the foreign country and Ukraine.

Required documents:

1. Death certificate:

  • A document issued by the competent authority of the country where the death occurred.
  • It must be legalized (if the country is not a party to the Hague Convention) or apostilled.

2. Certificate of absence of prohibited items in the body and coffin:

  • Confirms that there are no items in the body or coffin that are prohibited for transportation across the state border of Ukraine.

  • The certificate must be:

  • Translated into Ukrainian and certified by a Ukrainian consular or diplomatic institution.

3. Additional documents (depending on the country):

  • Customs declaration.
  • Transportation permit from the competent authorities of a foreign country.
  • Other documents in accordance with local legal requirements.
