Where to go:

  • Contact the nearest Ukrainian consulate in the country of residence to report the death of a Ukrainian citizen and organize the transportation of the body.

Information about the deceased is required:

  • NAME.
  • Date of birth.
  • Place of residence in Ukraine.
  • Passport data (internal and/or foreign passport).

Documents to be obtained:

  1. A death certificate (issued by the competent authorities of a foreign country certifying the fact of death).
  2. Certificate of the absence of attachments in the deceased's body or coffin (issued by the competent authority of a foreign state, legalized by the consulate of Ukraine).
  3. Passport for transportation of the body (can be issued by different authorities depending on the country, for example, in Germany it is issued by the civil registration authority - Standesamt).

Additional actions:

  1. Translation of documents: Get the death certificate and passport for transportation of the body translated into Ukrainian at an official translation agency.
  2. Apostilization: Obtain an Apostille stamp for the documents, if required by the country of residence. Information on apostillization is available at the consulate.
  3. Sealing the coffin: The coffin must be sealed by a funeral service or the Consulate General of Ukraine.
  4. Death stamp in the passport: Submit the original passport of the deceased to the consulate to have it stamped.

Important:

Ukrainian consulates are obliged to assist in obtaining the necessary documents and organizing the return of the body to Ukraine. The list of requirements may vary depending on the legislation of the country where the death occurred.
