Can parents not establishing the child’s patronymic?

  • General rule:
  • The patronymic of a child is determined by the name of the father.
  • Exceptions for national minorities:
  • If the child's mother and/or father are members of national minorities, patronymic:
  • May be formed in accordance with national traditions.
  • It may not be assigned at all if it is in accordance with the customs of the respective national minority.
  • Registration of the absence of a patronymic:
  • In order to officially register a child without a patronymic, you need to apply to the civil registry office with a statement confirming that you belong to a national minority.
