Can a person be deprived of Ukrainian citizenship?

Share

In Ukraine, the deprivation of citizenship is prohibited. According to the Constitution of Ukraine, a citizen of Ukraine cannot be deprived of their citizenship. However, legislation provides other mechanisms for the termination of Ukrainian citizenship:

1. Renunciation of Ukrainian Citizenship This is a voluntary act by an individual who wishes to terminate their citizenship. It is possible under the condition that the individual has already acquired the citizenship of another country or has obtained documentation confirming that they will acquire foreign citizenship upon renouncing their Ukrainian citizenship.

2. Loss of Ukrainian Citizenship This occurs as a result of certain actions by an individual, including:

  • Voluntary Acquisition of Citizenship of Another State: If done after reaching adulthood.
  • Voluntary Enrollment in Foreign Military Service: If the service is not mandatory under the laws of that foreign country.
  • Acquisition of Ukrainian Citizenship Based on Fraud: If obtained through deceit, knowingly providing false information, or submitting falsified documents.
