Halyna’s husband had a disability and faced significant difficulties with mobility, which forced him to remain in occupied territory, where he later passed away.
After relocating to Sumy region, the 73-year-old woman applied to the Civil Status Registration Office (DRATS) in Lebedyn to obtain a death certificate. However, she was refused due to the absence of the required documents. Living on a minimum pension, Halyna could not afford private legal services, making it difficult to resolve the issue on her own.
During a visit by a team from the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) to Lebedyn, Galina approached the team’s lawyer, Viktoria, for free legal advice. After discussing the situation, a clear action plan was developed to collect the full package of documents and evidence required for court proceedings. Once all necessary documents had been gathered, Viktoriia prepared and submitted an application to the court.
Following a positive court decision, the woman was finally able to obtain her husband’s Ukrainian death certificate.
DRC provides free legal aid in Sumy region thanks to funding provided by the European Union.
