In May, a resident of Kharkiv, Valentyna*, applied to the charitable organization Caritas Kharkiv for legal assistance. She faced difficulties in paying off her utility debt for heating supply, which was already being collected from her through court proceedings. It turned out that the debt was disproportionately high, as it had been accrued since 2014.
The woman has long been in a difficult financial situation (she supports her daughter and grandchildren), and her pension is not enough to fully repay the existing debt. Valentyna had already struggled to pay for utilities, and the war has only worsened the situation.
Lawyer Andrii explained the principles of applying the statute of limitations, helped to draft and properly file an application to the court for the application of the statute of limitations. Thanks to the lawyer’s professional support, the court applied the statute of limitations regarding the recovery of the heating debt, as a result of which a significant portion of the amount to be paid was reduced.
The charity organisation Caritas Kharkiv provides free legal aid to people affected by the war in cooperation with the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) thanks to financial support from the European Union.
