Ivan, a 49-year-old resident of the Kupiansk raion of the Kharkiv Oblast, was at home when the artillery shelling began. He suffered shrapnel wounds, was evacuated and taken to a hospital in Kharkiv.

During the evacuation, Ivan lost his Ukrainian passport, which deprived him of the opportunity to exercise his rights and privileges, apply for disability status, and receive the necessary social support. After treatment in the hospital, Ivan sought free legal assistance from Iryna, a lawyer with the Caritas Kharkiv charitable foundation.

Iryna provided Ivan with a detailed step-by-step algorithm for restoring his passport, helped him register in the electronic queue for the migration service, and accompanied him by phone at all stages of the process. In addition, the charitable foundation helped Ivan pay the administrative fee for restoring the document.

Thanks to this comprehensive support, Ivan received a new Ukrainian passport, which enabled him to apply for disability benefits and access social and other public services.

The charity organisation Caritas Kharkiv provides free legal aid to people affected by the war in cooperation with the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) thanks to financial support from the European Union.
