The International Foundation for Health and Environment “Carpathian Region” NEEKA is a non-governmental organization that operates in Western Ukraine. The organization was founded in the late 90s and its initial goal was to protect the environment. But since then, the activities of our organization have expanded significantly and we are now also engaged in social, humanitarian and legal assistance. In addition to the fact that the region in which the organization operates is located in a place with a unique nature, it is also a major transit corridor for migrants and refugees wishing to get to Europe.
Brief history:
For thousands of years, the Zakarpattia region has served as a kind of transit corridor connecting Europe and Asia. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the social system in the newly independent Ukraine was severely disrupted. The healthcare sector was the most affected, as numerous hospitals and clinics ceased to function properly. Together with its Western partners, NEEKA tried to bridge the gap, as it was clear that thousands of people belonging to vulnerable groups in the region were living in dire conditions. This was especially true for asylum seekers and refugees who were detained at the border because they were trying to enter Europe illegally, and at the same time could not return to their home country. Every year, the number of people detained while trying to illegally cross the border with one of the 4 neighboring EU states increased, and 45% of this category were women and children (the most vulnerable group).
Since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, NEEKA has been actively providing psychological, social, legal and humanitarian assistance to various categories of vulnerable and socially disadvantaged people, including internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Zakarpattia and Lviv regions, and partially in Ivano-Frankivsk and Chernivtsi regions. Currently, NEEKA has offices in Ukraine, Hungary and Romania, and is also active in neighboring countries: Slovakia and Poland.
