What is the difference between sex-based violence and domestic violence?

Share

Sex-based violence includes acts of physical, psychological, economic, or sexual nature committed against a person because of their sex or due to stereotypical perceptions of gender roles. This type of violence can occur in any setting, such as:

  • the workplace
  • educational or other institutions
  • in public or private life.

It is not limited to family or household relationships.

Domestic violence, on the other hand, is a form of violence that occurs within the family or between individuals who are or were in close relationships or shared a household. It can be perpetrated by relatives, spouses, partners, or other close individuals. Like sex-based violence, it may be physical, psychological, economic, or sexual in nature, and it harms the health, safety, dignity, or well-being of the survivor.
