Educational opportunities for children in Italy: enrollment procedure and requirements

Share

All children aged from 6 to 16 residing in Italy must attend school, regardless of their residence status.

Public schools are free of charge. The language of education is Italian.

Applications for admission to all levels of schools must be filled in online on the website of the Ministry of Education.

You will also need to provide:

  • the child's birth certificate (translated into Italian);
  • residence permit (yours and your child's);
  • a certificate of vaccination against polio, diphtheria, tetanus and hepatitis B; and
  • a school attendance/completion certificate from the country of origin.

If you are unable to provide the documents, your child's enrolment will be "provisional" (until the required documents are provided).

Registration usually starts in January or February of each year.

If the registration deadline is missed, parents should contact the secretary ("segreteria studenti") at the school to which they wish to enrol their child.

The secretary will help you with the registration process.
