Rights granted to people with refugee status

A person granted refugee status has the right to:

  • Work - the possibility of official employment on equal terms with citizens of the country.
  • Housing - access to social or private housing, depending on the host country's policy.
  • Education - the right to education, including access to schools, universities and vocational courses.
  • Freedom of relig ion - the ability to practice or change one's religion without restriction.
  • Protection of copyright and industrial rights - the protection of intellectual property rights.
  • Access to courts and legal aid - including free legal aid in certain cases.
  • Freedom of movement - movement within the host country and, under certain conditions, within the EU.
  • Obtaining an identity document - obtaining documents that confirm refugee status and ensure the legality of stay.
  • Subsequent citizenship - the possibility of applying for citizenship if the conditions of the host country are met.
  • Social security - access to social protection programmes, such as assistance to the poor or families with children.
  • State aid - financial or material support from the state to meet basic needs.

This list is a minimum guaranteed by international standards. EU host countries can expand the scope of rights and specify the procedure for their implementation.
