Obtaining temporary protection

Residence based on the visa-free regime. If you have a foreign biometric passport, you have the right to reside on the territory of EU countries for 90 days within 180 days. In this case, you need to purchase commercial health insurance. However, the visa-free regime does not provide the right to work or engage in commercial activities on the territory of the Czech Republic.


Obtaining temporary protection.

Temporary protection will be granted in the Czech Republic to the following persons:

- Citizens of Ukraine who lived in Ukraine until February 24, 2022, and subsequently left Ukraine;

- Foreigners of third countries and stateless persons who received any form of international protection on the territory of Ukraine until 24.02.2022;

- Family members of persons specified in points 1–2 who stayed with them in Ukraine until February 24, 2022, and subsequently left Ukraine. Family member – husband (wife), registered partner, unmarried minor child, and a dependent relative living in the family;

- Foreigners who resided in Ukraine until February 24, 2022, based on a permanent residence permit but cannot return to their country of origin or part of the country due to the threat of real danger.


Temporary protection may also be granted in connection with family reunification with a person with temporary protection or as an exception in other cases.


Temporary protection can be valid for one year, with the possibility of automatic extension twice for another six months. After that, the Council of the EU may decide to extend the temporary protection for up to 1 year. That is, the maximum term of temporary protection is three years. Therefore, the regional centre for Assistance to Ukrainians is issuing and extending an existing temporary protection visa in the Czech Republic until March 31, 2024.


After receiving temporary protection in the Czech Republic, you will have the following:

- the right to employment;

- free medical insurance (for 150 days) and medical assistance;

- the right to education;

- temporary housing;

- the right to financial assistance;
