Please note that health insurance is mandatory in Austria. At the same time, Ukrainians are given the right to receive medical care for free. The basis for this is the residence card and the replacement electronic card (e-card-Ersatzbeleg).
To receive a replacement electronic card (e-card-Ersatzbeleg), you must have an individual social insurance number (Sozial·versicherungs·nummer), which can be obtained from one of the ÖGK advice centres. You can consult about getting these documents by phone: +43 1 2676 870 9460 (Ukrainian-speaking operators work).
However, as a rule, Ukrainians in one of the available legal regimes in Austria automatically receive an individual social insurance number (Sozial·versicherungs·nummer) upon obtaining this status. In this regard, they are entitled to free medical care within the framework of the state insurance system (Österreichische Gesundheitskasse – ÖGK) by first contacting the ÖGK mentioned above consultation centres for a replacement electronic card (e-card-Ersatzbeleg).
Thanks to the e-card-Ersatzbeleg, you will be entitled to free medical care, treatments, aids and appliances, clinical and psychological diagnosis, ambulance and rescue transport, institutional care, and medical care at home.
It is worth noting that if you are officially employed in Austria, the employer is obliged to insure you, and the transition from one type of insurance to another occurs automatically. At the same time, in case of dismissal, to restore the previous health insurance, you will have to contact the competent authority yourself at the e-mail address [email protected].
Important! If you need to know your social security number or have to receive it, contact the public authorities at [email protected]. To find your social security number, you must include your first name, last name, and date of birth in the letter and send a copy of your social security number and your scanned signature.
Please note that you can use the DocFinder portal to find a Ukrainian- or English-speaking doctor in Austria. The portal includes language proficiency filters and information on whether the doctor provides services under state social insurance. To do this, you need to select ÖGK in the Krankenkasse filter. Otherwise, the expenses for the doctor will not be covered by the insurance company but by you directly.
Information for pregnant women
To use the entire package of medical services in connection with pregnancy, which are provided by your health insurance, you must consult a doctor before the 14th week of pregnancy. Important! You can choose your gynecologist by first ensuring he accepts your insurance. After you have found a doctor you like, he must register you at the place of appointment. In the future, you should solve all questions regarding pregnancy through this doctor.
Pregnant women have the right to medical care, the help of certified pediatric and pediatric junior medical personnel, as well as necessary medication and hospital care during their stay in the hospital.
