Do you need to have an international driving license in order to drive car abroad?

An international driver's license is required in certain countries, such as the USA, Japan, Canada, Australia, and some other countries. In most EU member states, a Ukrainian driver's license is recognized as valid. The exceptions are Ireland, Cyprus, and Malta, where an international driving license is required.

What is an international driving license?

• It is a translation of your national driver's license certified by the state authorities.
• It is issued within 5 working days after submitting the application.

Documents required to obtain an international driver's license:

1. Original and copy of the national driver's license.
2. Passport of a citizen of Ukraine (or ID-card with a certificate of residence registration).
3. Passport for traveling abroad.
4. A 3.5×4.5 cm photo on matte paper.
5. Receipt of payment for the administrative service.

Additional conditions:

• The international driving license is valid for 3 years.
• The national driver's license remains with you and will not be confiscated.
• Without the national license, the international license is invalid.

• Temporary use of a Ukrainian driver's license is possible in many countries. The validity of this right depends on the legislation of a particular country.
