Persons with temporary protection can travel outside Norway.
Please note that you must be in Norway for at least half of the time your permit is valid.
When going abroad, you need to have:
•valid foreign passport/immigrant passport/travel document for refugees;
• a valid residence permit.
If you do not have a valid passport or a valid residence card, you should not leave Norway. You may have problems at the airport, when entering another country or when returning to Norway. It is the residence card that confirms that you have a residence permit in Norway.
After receiving temporary protection, you can no longer travel back and forth between Norway and Ukraine without consequences for your residence permit. This rule is effective from 12.12.2023. You can go to Ukraine if you have a good reason for it, such as visiting a seriously ill close relative or participating in the funeral of a close family member.
Your trip to Ukraine may be perceived by the Norwegian government as meaning that you may no longer need protection in Norway. Therefore, the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) may decide to withdraw your permit.
The Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) cannot pre-approve your travel. If you travel to Ukraine and the UDI starts proceedings to withdraw your residence permit, you will be given the opportunity to explain or provide documents such as a medical certificate for a sick family member.
