How to protect your internet searches

Share

If you are experiencing violence, searching for help and information online can be an important step toward safety. However, it is crucial to protect your privacy while browsing the internet, especially if you are in danger of being monitored by an abuser. Here are some simple and effective ways to keep your online activity private and secure.

Delete Your Browsing History

  1. If you are not using private browsing, clear your history after visiting sensitive websites.
  2. Google Chrome: Click the three dots > History > Clear browsing data.
  3. Mozilla Firefox: Click the menu > History > Clear Recent History.
  4. Safari: Click History > Clear History.
  5. Microsoft Edge: Click the three dots > Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Clear browsing data.

💡 Tip: If you share a device, delete only recent history to avoid raising suspicion

Be Careful with Saved Passwords

If your abuser has access to your device, they may check your saved passwords.

  • Use a strong password for your accounts.
  • Do not save passwords in the browser if someone else has access to your device.
  • Log out of accounts after using them.

💡 Tip: Use a password manager to store your passwords securely instead of saving them in your browser.

Use a Safe Device

If possible, use a device your abuser cannot access, such as:

  • A friend’s or family member’s phone or computer.
  • A public computer at a library or internet café.
  • A work computer (if safe to do so).

💡 Tip: If you must use a shared device, clear history and log out after searching.

Emergency Exit: Quick Ways to Hide Your Screen

If you need to quickly hide a website:

  • Windows: Press Alt + Tab to switch windows or Windows + D to go to the desktop.
  • Mac: Press Command + Tab to switch applications or Command + H to hide the window.
  • Use a “quick exit” button – Some GBV websites have an emergency exit button that redirects you to a neutral website.

💡 Tip: Always have a harmless website (like news or weather) open in another tab to switch to if needed.

Stay Safe Online

Protecting your online activity can help you access support without putting yourself at risk. If you believe your device is being monitored or controlled, seek help using a different device. If you are in immediate danger, contact a trusted person or emergency services.
