What Is Psychological violence?

Psychological violence involves manipulation, intimidation, and control to undermine a person’s sense of self-worth and autonomy. It can happen in intimate relationships, families, workplaces, or other settings.

Common forms of psychological violence include:

  • Constant criticism and belittling – making a person feel worthless
  • Gaslighting – distorting reality to make someone question their own memory or perception
  • Threats and intimidation – using fear to control behavior.
  • Isolation – restricting access to family, friends, or support networks
  • Silent treatment and emotional neglect – withholding affection or communication to punish or control
  • Blaming and guilt-tripping – making the affected person feel responsible for the abuser’s actions
