Often, the procedure for legal confirmation of the death of loved ones in the territories occupied by the Russian Federation is unclear and requires clarification from lawyers.
Oleksandr, who left Luhansk Oblast because of the war, lost his father in an occupied village. The man did not know how to legally formalize the fact of his death and hoped to do it after the end of hostilities.
However, after learning about free legal aid from Caritas Mariupol, he decided to consult a specialist. The lawyer explained to Oleksandr the mechanism of establishing the fact of death in the occupied territory in court. To do this, he needed photocopies of the primary death documents, which he managed to collect thanks to his relatives in Luhansk Oblast.
Together with a lawyer, the man drew up an application, which was later granted by the court. Now Oleksandr can get his father's death certificate and resolve the issue of inheritance, his unpaid pension, etc.
Free legal aid to internally displaced persons in Dnipropetrovska oblast is provided by Caritas Mariupol in cooperation with the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) with funding from the European Union.
